The 94-acre
Jerome Park
Reservoir in Spring 2014, filled with water for the first time since
2008. Construction continues. Efforts are underway to have the fenced-off
area open to the public as parkland, similar to the area around the Central
Park Reservoir in Manhattan. The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (the
agency in charge of the city's reservoirs) points out that this is an active
functioning component of the New York City water supply, unlike the Central
Park Reservoir (which is now purely decorative) and therefore should be
protected.
Legislation
proposed in June 2014 would transfer the reservoir perimeter from the
DEP to to the Department of Parks and Recreation in order to open it to the
public.
