A Boro Taxi. In the early 1970s when I drove a yellow cab out of a Bronx
garage, all the drivers headed straight for Manhattan. I was the only
yellow cab driver who always tried to stay in the Bronx all day. The people
were much nicer and the streets less congested. Every time I picked
somebody up they were amazed; a yellow cab had never stopped for them
before. Now 40 years later, NYC finally faced reality – i.e. that
yellow cab drivers will never serve the Bronx or any other part of the city
not inhabited by Masters of the Universe – and so created a new kind
of metered taxi licensed for street hails anywhere
except in
Manhattan (south of West 110th Street and East 96th Street) or at the
airports, the areas favored by yellow cabs: the “apple green”
Boro
Taxi.
