Photo: The Bronx It Was Only Yesterday 1925-1965 by Lloyd Ultan and Gary Hermalyn, Bronx County Historical Society (1992). “Williamsbridge Oval Park is only recently-opened in September, 1937. Converted from a reservoir, a chain link fence cordons off the athletic field and track in the center of the Oval. The park also features playgrounds, tennis, horseshoe courts and picnic areas. Playgrounds where children are playing are to the left and right. The large structure at the edge near the center houses meeting rooms, lockers and rest rooms. Outside the park, on Van Cortlandt Avenue East and Mosholu Parkway, stands P.S. 80. Apartment houses in this Norwood neighborhood otherwise dominate the scene.” The girl at left is standing on the grandstand that was erected for the opening ceremony of the park on September 11, 1937.
