Women showing up for the first day of work at
Brooklyn Navy Yard, which began hiring women in 1942[1]. "Before electronic
surveillance gates, these 'Rosie the Riveters' — the first-ever women
to work at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II — had to
open their handbags for security reasons."[2]
