Astoria Pool sentinel
|
A spot on the
Astoria Pool promenade
overlooking the pool and the Hell Gate Bridge. In 1937 this semicircular
nook was home to the 16-foot polished steel statue
Nymph with Beach
Ball shown at left, by WPA sculptor
Emil Siebern, one of
two "Astoria Pool Sentinels" atop each corner of the main pool entrance.
They were removed in 1943, ostensibly due to deterioration (
stainless
steel?), more likely for war use.
