Statue of Władysław II Jagiełło, King of Poland and Grand Duke of
Lithuania, (1386-1434) by sculptor Stanisław K. Ostrowski (1879-1947)[1]
pictured in front of the Polish Pavilion at 1939 World's Fair, standing on a
massive plinth designed by Aymar Embury II[1,2]. After Poland was
invaded at the beginning of World War II in 1939, the statue (on
Embury's granite pedestal) was removed to storage. In 1945 the Polish
government in exile donated the monument to the City and it was rededicated
at its current location overlooking Central Park’s Turtle Pond.[2]
Color photo by Christopher Ziemnowicz, Wikimedia Commons;
the current pedestal does not seem to be Embury's.
