WPA crews at work in
Colonial Park, 1937, looking
west along 145th Street. If no "USA WORK Program WPA" signs are on display,
that's characteristic of all the WPA jobs overseen by the Parks Department,
whose Commissioner, Robert Moses, was an opponent of President Roosevelt and
of the New Deal. Even though he accepted countless millions of their
dollars to build his parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, parkways, tunnels,
and bridges. Compare these photos with shots of other WPA work sites such
as the
Brooklyn
Navy Yard or anywhere else in the USA.
