Jackie Robinson Recreation Center entrances,
mirror-image symmetry across the massive center buttress. The inset
bas-reliefs by an unidentified WPA sculptor show swimming and diving scenes
(see closeups in the next two images). The "cornerstone" at the bottom of
center column has had its date smashed out and plastered over. Parks
Commissioner Robert Moses did not like cornerstones or plaques. Perhaps the
WPA crew thought they could get away with one here because it's not a plaque
and it's not a corner. Nevertheless, there remains no clue to the
contemporary visitor of not only who built it, but when. (I don't
really know the story of this damage, but it seems suspiciously convenient.)
