Grant Avenue, constructed in 1939 with
Federal Emergency Administration
of Public Works funding (this was the original name of the Public Works
Administration — the PWA). The building now houses the Santa Fe
County Administrative Building.

Asked to Approve Grant for Courthouse, The Santa Fe New Mexican,
25 August 1938, p.1: "Application of the Santa Fe county board of
commissioners for approval by PWA of a $246,363.33 courthouse project was
delevered today to Capt. Edward H. Oakley, special PWA representative for
New Mexico. The application ... asks the PWA for an outright grant of
$110,863.63, prepresenting 45 per cent of the estimated cost of the
project. The balance, $135,000, or 55 per cent, is to be furnished by the
county, $100,000 by a bond issue, $10,500 now on hand as proceeds from the
sale of the old county jail, and $25,000 to be received as a minimum bid for
purchase of the present courthouse site ... The plans and specifications for
the new courthouse, completed by the office of Architect John Gaw Meem,
provide for a building similar to the new municipal building".

Dedication Takes Place Tomorrow,
The Santa Fe New Mexican, 6 January 1940, p.1,3: "Milo H. Johnson,
traveling engineer for the Public Works Administration, will deliver
the principal address as Santa Fe's new $250,000 county courthouse,
long a dream of officials and brought into reality within the past year, is
officially dedicated to the public in ceremonies Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Johnson will represent Regional PWA Directory George M. Bull of Fort
Work, Texas, unable to be present for the ceremonies. ... Following the
opening address by Governor Miles ... Mr. Johnson will then deliver the
dedication address with Miguel Leyva, chairman of the board of county
commissioners, accepting the structure from the PWA.
