Requiem for a WPA Tree
The big trees in Oval Park were planted by the WPA about 1936 as one small
part of building Oval Park itself, which opened in 1937. The WPA trees are
now more than 80 years old and — like World War II veterans —
they are vanishing rapidly. These photos record the end of one of these
trees.
