Navy aircraft carrier USS
Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-13) approaches
New York City (USA), while en route to the New York Naval Shipyard for
repairs, 26 April 1945. Note the extensive damage to the aft flight deck,
received when it was hit by a Japanese air attack off the coast of Japan on
19 March 1945. The USS FDR ("Rosie" for short) was built at the Brooklyn
Navy Yard; the keel was laid in December 1943 and it was launched April 29,
1945, just days after President Roosevelt's death. Originally called the
Coral Sea, it was renamed in FDR's honor and sailed the seas until
1977.
