Coronado Historic Site, Bernalillo NM (just north of Albuquerque [
MAP]), named after the Spanish
explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado who "discovered" it in 1540. Welcome
sign: "Ancient Ruins of Kuaua Pueblo, Coronado Historical Site —
Established March 7, 1935". The site was settled by the Tiwa people about
AD 1325 and was abandoned some time after Coronado found it. It was
rediscovered by archeologists from the University of New Mexico in the 1930s
and excavated with the aid of the federal Works Progress Administration
(WPA) (which also designed and built the visitor center and museum) as well
as the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and the National Youth
Administration (NYA) — three "alphabet soup" agencies in all. See the
