Entrance to the IND subway station at West 4th Street, near Washington Square in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City, April 23, 2018. "Everybody knows" that (at least) parts of the D line, including many of its stations, were New Deal projects. But I so far I have not been able to find a definitive reference. Living New Deal says of this station (as it does of many other stations on this line), "The Sixth Avenue branch trunk line of New York City's Independent Subway (IND) was constructed during the 1930s with the aid of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. On December 15, 1940, six additional IND subway stations opened along Sixth Avenue. The West Fourth Street — Washington Square subway station was one of the six to open at this time."[1] I'll leave it that for now.
