|Astoria Pool sentinel
A spot on the Astoria Pool
overlooking the pool and the Hell Gate Bridge. In 1937 this semicircular
nook was home to the 16-foot polished steel statue Nymph with Beach
shown at left, by WPA sculptor Emil Siebern
, one of
two "Astoria Pool Sentinels" atop each corner of the main pool entrance.
They were removed in 1943, ostensibly due to deterioration (stainless
), more likely for war use.
