Aymar Embury II (1880-1966) was the New York City Parks Department's chief architect during the New Deal. As explained HERE, although he worked for Robert Moses, Embury — along with most other Parks Department architects, engineers, and workers — were paid by federal New Deal agencies such as the CWA and WPA. Thus any project where Embury is listed as an architect in his Parks Department capacity during the New Deal is a New Deal project by definition. In most cases, of course, these projects also depended on New Deal funds for labor, engineering, and materials. But since the documentation on the funding spotty, Embury's involvement in any Parks Department project 1934-1943 should be sufficient to demonstrate that the project has a New Deal component. The reason I stress the Parks department is that Embury also had private commissions during the same period, and he was also employed at the Port Authority and the Triborough Bridge Authority (both, like Parks, headed by Robert Moses), and I'm not sure how he was paid in the latter two positions.

It is frequently noted in the histories that during his New Deal tenure at the Parks Department, Embury designed such New York City landmarks as the Triborough Bridge, Orchard Beach and bathhouse, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Central Park Zoo, most of the 11 magnificent WPA swimming pools of 1936, the Henry Hudson Bridge, Bryant Park, and "about 600 other projects". But what are those other projects? Assembling the list would require a long visit to the Aymar Embury II papers at Syracuse University, housed in many, many boxes. And/or the Parks Department and Fiorello LaGuardia archives housed in the NYC Municipal Archive. I haven't done either of those things; this page is the best I can do without traveling.

Several tables are presented below. Each table is sortable on any single column such as Date or Borough; click the desired column heading to sort; click it again to reverse the order. Table 1 lists all the Embury projects I have have been able to identify from all sources — NYC Parks Department archives, books, newspaper archives, and websites — 235 of them so far; I expect to be adding to and refining this table as time passes. In the table, if a project row contains one or more hyperlinks, at least one of them affirms Embury's role in the project (links in the Date column are to Parks Department press releases). If not, a number in [brackets] indicates a reference (listed below the table) where he is credited as architect for the project. "Table2" or "Table3" in brackets means that Embury is named as the architect for the project in the table indicated. Table 2 is an extract from the Office for Metropolitan History, Manhattan New Building (NB) Database: 100 structures in Manhattan where Embury was the architect of a Parks Department project during the New Deal years; N.B. buildings only, not parks or playgrounds or bridges or tunnels. Table 3 contains the results of searching the New York Times archive for "aymar embury" 1934-1943 for all articles relating to his Parks Department projects.

Greenwich Village Historic District Extension II Designation Report, NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, 22 June 2010: "In 1931 WPA funding made possible the construction of a long-awaited outdoor pool for the Carmine Street public bath facility, and in 1934, Parks Department supervisory architect and landscape architect Aymar Embury II designed a neo-Colonial style public comfort station for a mid-block site on the south side of Carmine Street. The comfort station's vaulted breezeway provided access to a children's playground fronting on Downing Street, enclosed by a high brick wall. Embury's choice of Federal-inspired details for this diminutive recreational building — Flemish bond brickwork, decorative ironwork in a fanlight pattern, and splayed-keystone lintels — was a fitting nod to Greenwich Village's architectural past."
  36. Kahn, David M., Curator, Manhattan Cities, General Grant National Memorial: Historical Resource Study, National Park Service, January 1980, p.173: "[An] earlier plan to enlarge the plaza surrounding the tomb and to relandscape the area was adopted in most of its details by landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, and architect Aymar Embury ... and became the centerpiece of the exterior rehabilitation ... [S]ome interesting features were added to the plan. The parkland was increased by ten feet to both the east and west at the expense of the two brances of Riverside Drive ... A ... contract was signed ... to supply the necessary granite for the stairs and retaining walls [and money] was supplied for new trees, shrubs and sod for the area, and a new fence was erected around the memorial tree area to the north of the tomb. All of the labor was supplied by the W.P.A. Floodlights may also have been installed on the upper part of the tomb."

* This is a mistake. The boathouse at 72nd Street is the Model Boathouse on the Conservatory Water. But that boathouse was built in 1874 and wasn't replaced by the present Kerbs Boathouse until 1954. This entry most likely refers to the Harlem Meer Boathouse that was started in 1941 (on 110th Street, as noted 3 entries above), abandoned for two years, and then finished in 1943.
