It is frequently noted in the histories that during his New Deal tenure at the Parks Department, Embury designed such New York City landmarks as the Triborough Bridge, Orchard Beach and bathhouse, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Central Park Zoo, most of the 11 magnificent WPA swimming pools of 1936, the Henry Hudson Bridge, Bryant Park, and "about 600 other projects". But what are those other projects? Assembling the list would require a long visit to the Aymar Embury II papers at Syracuse University, housed in many, many boxes. And/or the Parks Department and Fiorello LaGuardia archives housed in the NYC Municipal Archive. I haven't done either of those things; this page is the best I can do without traveling.
Several tables are presented below. Each table is sortable on any single column such as Date or Borough; click the desired column heading to sort; click it again to reverse the order. Table 1 lists all the Embury projects I have have been able to identify from all sources — NYC Parks Department archives, books, newspaper archives, and websites — 235 of them so far; I expect to be adding to and refining this table as time passes. In the table, if a project row contains one or more hyperlinks, at least one of them affirms Embury's role in the project (links in the Date column are to Parks Department press releases). If not, a number in [brackets] indicates a reference (listed below the table) where he is credited as architect for the project. "Table2" or "Table3" in brackets means that Embury is named as the architect for the project in the table indicated. Table 2 is an extract from the Office for Metropolitan History, Manhattan New Building (NB) Database: 100 structures in Manhattan where Embury was the architect of a Parks Department project during the New Deal years; N.B. buildings only, not parks or playgrounds or bridges or tunnels. Table 3 contains the results of searching the New York Times archive for "aymar embury" 1934-1943 for all articles relating to his Parks Department projects.

* | This is a mistake. The boathouse at 72nd Street is the Model Boathouse on the Conservatory Water. But that boathouse was built in 1874 and wasn't replaced by the present Kerbs Boathouse until 1954. This entry most likely refers to the Harlem Meer Boathouse that was started in 1941 (on 110th Street, as noted 3 entries above), abandoned for two years, and then finished in 1943. |
